JARDIANCE, which inhibits the sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2), is prescribed for the following purposes:
• To reduce the likelihood of cardiovascular death and hospitalization in adults with heart failure. • To lower the risk of cardiovascular death in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus and established cardiovascular disease. • To improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus when used in conjunction with diet and exercise.
There are specific constraints on the utilization of this drug, which comprise of:
• Patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus should avoid using it as it may elevate the risk of diabetic ketoacidosis. • Adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus and an eGFR less than 30 mL/min/1.73 m2 should refrain from using it to enhance glycemic control.
Before starting the treatment, evaluate the person's hydration status and resolve any concerns associated with low fluid levels.
• The prescribed dose is 10 mg once daily, in the morning, regardless of food intake.
• If the patient tolerates JARDIANCE well and requires improved glycemic management, the dosage may be increased to 25 mg.

JARDIANCE Side Effects:
There are several potential risks and adverse effects associated with the use of JARDIANCE, including:
• Ketoacidosis, a severe condition characterized by an increase in ketones in the blood or urine that can lead to death. It can occur in individuals with type 1 or type 2 diabetes who are taking JARDIANCE, even if their blood sugar is less than 250 mg/dL. Those who are ill or have undergone surgery while taking JARDIANCE may also be at risk. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fatigue, or difficulty breathing and check for ketones in your urine, if possible.
• Dehydration, which can cause dizziness, fainting, lightheadedness, or weakness, especially when standing. JARDIANCE can lead to a sudden decline in kidney function, particularly in individuals who are taking blood pressure-lowering drugs, following a low-salt diet, or have kidney issues, or who are 65 years of age or older. Consult your healthcare provider about the recommended daily fluid intake and what to do if you experience vomiting, diarrhea, or excessive exposure to the sun.
• Serious urinary tract infections that may necessitate hospitalization. Symptoms may include pain while urinating, frequent or urgent urination, lower abdominal or pelvic pain, or bloody urine. Some individuals may also experience fever, back pain, nausea, or vomiting.
• Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) when JARDIANCE is used with other medications that may induce hypoglycemia, such as sulfonylurea or insulin. Symptoms of low blood sugar may include headache, weakness, dizziness, confusion, hunger, rapid heartbeat, sweating, shaking, or irritability. Your healthcare provider may need to adjust your medication dosage.
• Necrotizing fasciitis, an uncommon but severe bacterial infection that affects the tissue beneath the skin in the perineum (the area between the anus and genitals). This infection can result in hospitalization, multiple surgeries, and death. Seek medical attention immediately if you experience fever, weakness, malaise, or pain, tenderness, swelling, or redness of the skin in the perineum.
• Vaginal yeast infection, which may cause vaginal odor, white or yellowish vaginal discharge that may be lumpy or resemble cottage cheese, and vaginal itching.
• Yeast infection of the penis, which may cause swelling that makes it difficult to retract the skin around the penis, redness, itching, rash, foul-smelling discharge, and pain in the skin around the penis. Talk to your healthcare provider if you experience any of these symptoms.
